The Victors

Erected back in 1988, this unusual sculpture sits at the end of Main Street in Tallaght Village. Carved from limestone by the sculptor Dick Joynt, it is called the Victors. It is said to depict four adults holding children aloft and symbolises the strength and unity of the family. There is also some nice spiral work at the base. Interestingly it stands on the site of the ‘Old Cross of Tallaght’, which disappeared without a trace in the 18th century. Joynt was  initially trained as a painter and but turned to sculpture after joining the Dublin Art Foundry in 1972. He travelled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico during the 1960s before returning to Ireland and setting up ‘Craan Studios.’ Father of artist Rachel Joynt, he received numerous public sculptures throughout his career. These include the 13ft high limestone piece entitled “The Victors” sited in the main street in Tallaght, Dublin (1988) “The Ram” at Wicklow County Council and “The Music Makers” in  Kenmare Bay.
