With today being World Photography Day, I have been scouring the web to see what is going on. It amazes me that the first commercially available 35mm film camera was only developed 90 years ago? And the digital camera only came out 20 years ago. In fact would you believe that camera phones were only beginning to come out 15 years ago? With advancements in digital technologies photography is now easily accessible to every Man, Woman and Child. Whether it’s a quick selfie on your smart phone or an artistic landscape or portrait taken on a DSLR, we can now capture images anywhere and anytime.
And so the little hamster in my head started to race around on his wheel and I got thinking, this weekend is the start of National Heritage Week here in Ireland, which runs from 22 – 30 August 2015. You can find out more about it HERE. So why not combine these two passions of mine into a weekly Challenge?
The plan is quite simple, each Wednesday I will be posting an image of a random site with a heritage connection and I would love for you to join in the challenge. Any images sent in will be included in the challenge along with your name and a link to your site. Full credit is given to each participant. The joy of this challenge is that we can all participate and share our images whilst raising the awareness of our own particular History and Heritage. The image can be anything from an old Church or Castle, to a Battlefield or Neolithic tomb, the choices are endless. And you can capture the image on any device you choose to. It can be in colour, black and white or any variation. The important thing is that we share.
And so to make sure that the challenge runs smoothly here are a few notes on how to participate:
- All images must have been taking by you, there is no time restriction on this and you retain the copyright for your images
- Images should be submitted via email by no later than midnight GMT on the Sunday before so I can ensure the challenge is ready to be posted on the Wednesday morning. My email address is edmooneyphotography@gmail.com
- You don’t have to even have to be a WordPress blogger. This challenge is open to everyone, please include your name and a link back to your blog, website or social media page.
- Images should be kept at low resolution with the largest side at 1000 pixels or less, if you need help with this you can pm me.
- Once the challenge is published I will delete all files and mails from that week .
And that is really it, im really looking forward to this challenge and I hope that many of you will join me each week. Please remember the purpose of this challenge is to share our history and heritage so please be nice and remember to check the comments section for messages about your image.
So get out there and get snapping, we have just over a week to go 🙂
Sounds like FUN, Ed! Might send in a pic or two myself! 😀

I would expect nothing less Ali 👍 actually I’m up your neck of the woods on Saturday, well Cootehill to be precise. Got any recommendations? I’ll be at a christening, and don’t fancy sitting around drinking afterwards so if their was anything nearby that I could sneak off too for a few minutes I’d be well pleased 😁

Carys goes to school in Cootehill, but in terms or archaeology, I don’t know of anything. Let me get my thinking cap on…

Ed is running a Photo Challenge as part of Heritage Week. Got any pictures you’d like to send in?

Good luck with this, Ed. I hope that you get a good response. I doubt I will be sending any in, unless I get the chance to snap something suitably ancient in the meantime!
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks Pete, fingers crossed it all goes well. Hey don’t go counting yourself out yet. It’s pretty relaxed, the only stipulation is that the image contains something of cultural, heritage or historical importance. It don’t have to be a 5000 year old standing stone. It could be an old warehouse from 50 years ago. I would love to see something from you 😁👍

Great idea. Can’t wait to see what images show up.
Black and white photos have their own elegance and seem so solid. Nicely done

Why thank you, it’s been a while since I participated in a weekly challenge and this will be my first personal one. Really hope people get envolved, why not through in an image yourself, it should be great fun? 😁

It does sound like fun. Here on the Gulf coastal plains, no castles or the like, ancient sites, maybe, but no ruins…there is history…hmmm, will have to look around.

Does not matter, have you seen my images from when I started my blog, omg I get embarrised just thinking about it.
This challenge is not just about photography. It’s purpose is to raise awareness of the many cultural and heritage sites around the globe. Its about sharing and meeting other bloggers.
No pressure but I would love to have you join in, if you like 👍😁

Maybe! Although my husband takes most of the photos on my blog – but I guess that wouldn’t matter if it’s clear? And I’m assuming it’s not just Irish heritage you are looking for?

Absolutely not, it’s open to heritage from everywhere, and I would be delighted if either you or you husband where to take part😁👍

Oh, this is a GOOD idea, Ed! I followed a link from Elissaveta to get here, not knowing where it would lead, and you are already in my Inbox awaiting a visit (apologies!). I’m off to the Algarve next week and won’t be around much for a while but I’ll look you up when I’m back.
Is this confined to UK heritage, or can I broaden it? 🙂

Ah glad to hear it Johanna, Its open to heritage from anywhere, Im really hoping to get a global feel to this as most of my stuff is bassed in Ireland. So far I got people from the UK and the US on board, so the more the merrier 🙂

Got that, thank you I love it, the challenge will go live each Wednesday morning, each image will have a link back to the originators page. It would be lovely if each contributor would write a small price about their image on their own page as well, so that it all links up, if that makes sense? 👍

Will follow with eagerness. Ed maybe you’ll do an overseas challenge one week 😉
