That time of year again, with a family tradition of bringing the kids down to the local parade in Monasterevin town. Now I’m not going to get into my personal views here on the origins of the day which has basically turned into a worldwide celebration of being Irish. It would seem that everybody these days wants to be Irish. As usual the Irish weather didn’t fail to let us down, but the show went on. With the usual local groups on parade including the irish army and Lord Edwards Own, a great reenactment group It seemed like a scaled down parade this year but the kids enjoyed themselves which was the main thing. So with the parade over for another year it was time for the traditional drowning of the shamrock in Finlays.

PLEASE tell me what drowning shamrocks is??? My family heritage is Irish (Kennedy from County Mayo) but I have not heard of this. Please tell me it is something wonderful and silly so I can start a new family tradition. Right now all my cousins are naming the middle names of their sons after “Irish” alcohols such as Joseph Jameson and Maddox Killian. Us American Irish can be ridiculous.
