After the success of my recent article on St. Colmcille’s well, I was approached by the nice folk from Tallaght Community Council earlier this week about doing another article for the “Love Tallaght Outdoors” series which is published weekly in the Tallaght Echo. So I was delighted to get another chance to share some of my explorations. I love blogging as it affords me the opportunity to share some of my passions with others under one banner. But there is nothing quite like seeing your work published in the print media, be it a book, magazine or indeed the local newspaper. A good friend and fellow blogger extraordinaire had recently been encouraging me to try to get my work published in a local paper. And so with two articles already published with little effort, I think it might be time to start approaching some of the local or even maybe national papers about featuring a regular ‘Diary of a Ruinhunter’, feature? So if you are reading this and are an editor or publisher and would like to discuss such a feature, then please get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
Any so moving on to the important bit. The subject of this weeks article, which goes right back to my childhood. Ballymount Castle which has sadly all but vanished, was a fantastic Castle ruin with some amazing historical connections. Thanks to a motorway and tram line running through its path very little remains but the fond memories of many children, whom spent their summers playing amongst its ruins. I last visited Ballymount Castle back in 2012 which is now situated within the grounds of a park beside the aforementioned motorway and tram line. You can read the original piece HERE. This is a prime example of why it is so important to document and try to preserve as much of our remaining heritage as possible. It has been one of the main driving factors behind what I do. I know that this year has not been great but with weather permitting this sunday I have a huge expedition planned for Meath and a list of over 50 ruins to try and fit in, so fingers crossed I will have a lot more really cool and interesting places to share with you over the coming weeks. So stay tuned for further updates…….
Congratulations

Well done indeed Ed. Two printed publications! Great work. I note these shots were in colour though, and not your ‘signature’ B+W.
Best wishes, Pete.

Thanks Pete, that was three years ago, I was still shooting in color. I hope that both my photography and writing skills have improved since then. Maybe its time to revisit the old place and give it a more proffessional going over?

Eddie, very excited for you. But I must admit I knew this was coming a long time ago. Next thing you know you will have your own TV program. Just remember your good buddy, Steve.

Ah thanks for the vote of confidence Steve. Not sure if I have the face for TV, perhaps a documentry series might be nice though. I could travel the world exploring its ancient ruins? Now that would be cool. You could be my guide around Russia? 🙂

Wonderful news, Ed, and some well deserved success! Maybe this will give you the confidence to now start approaching other publications. Best of luck with it, if you do decide to go for it. I just know you’ll do well. So happy for you!

Thanks Ali, you know its all your fault. Im thinking of going for either one of the nationals or a local Kildare paper, or maybe both and see what happens. Right now Im just hopping the weather holds up for Sunday. Got a serious amount of travelling to do 🙂

You will have a great day! And if the weather isn’t the best, well it will make a dramatic backdrop for your pics. How many places you planning on visiting? And hey! How is it all my fault??? I think you should do both, BTW, and also IC.

Cause you put the idea in my head in the first place! So Thank You 🙂
I got 60+ sites laid out all over Meath, alot of them are not very well known and of course there is Tara, I havent been in ages. Gonna spend some time at Rath Grainne. I always had a strange connection to it. The rest are Standing Stones, Churches, Castles and whatever else I come across en route. Just gonna go hell for leather and see what happens 🙂

Wow sounds great! You mentioned that connection with Rath Grainne once before. I’d love to talk to you about that one day. 60+ sites is a lot! You don’t mean to visit them all in one day… Do you???

Well done Ed. We took a trip up to St Colmcille’s Well last week after reading your piece. I have to say it was a little underwhelming! I expected it to be bigger somehow! But nice spot for a picnic if it wasn’t for the swarms of flies!!!

Sorry to hear that, you could have went up to Masseys Estate or the Hell fire club, they are both close by, with loads of space and Johnny Foxs is right beside them for a well earned liquid picnic! 🙂

Funny that! We were up in Massey’s last weekend and did indeed end up in Johnny Foxes followed by The Blue Light! Our dogs love a good pub crawl!

Deadly, spent many a great night up their, but stop blaming the dogs. My Father in Law does that. Every time he takes the dog for a walk, he is actually going to the boozer lol 🙂

It is about f**king time your local and national print media started paying to attention to your work! You are a national asset for Ireland, and the faster the powers that be realize this the better. Congratulations! I hope you are buried in publishing offers and your family blessed with great health and happiness.
