This is not Goodbye

Gran 1a

Elizabeth Maud (Babs) Gunning

1918 – 2014

Last Saturday whilst many were celebrating St. Brigid’s day, we received the worst news possible. My dear Gran had passed away. Sometimes with the sadness that accompanies the loss of a loved one, we forget the most important thing. To celebrate the lives they had. I have many fond and happy personal memories of my Gran which shall remain with me always, although no longer physically with us she shall remain forever in our heads and hearts. Gran was a terrific lady, it was never Christmas in our house until she arrived. She was both kind and generous, with a free spirit which led her to travel the world in later life. As young kids she imparted her adventurous spirit on us and we even got to go on some trips with her. At the fine age of 95 Gran has left on her next adventure, and whilst she wont be coming back to us this time, I look forward to a time when we will meet again.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Aww, sorry for your loss. She looked to be such a character indeed. I lost all my grandparents before I was 13 so have limited, but good memories. Having been widowed twice, I heartily agree that it’s about celebrating memories of their life, not their passing. We all have our time; some earlier than others, that’s all. Maybe you can do a ‘special post’ on Gran, photos over the years or something to celebrate her 🙂

  8. I feel for you and your family Ed. You never get over a loss – you just get used to the person not being there after a bit of time. At least your children were old enough to have gotten to know your Gran – so her legacy will move on with the next generation.

It’s strange how, in our hearts we know that our elders aren’t going to always be around, yet it’s still such a shock when they leave. I like the thought that your Gran is embarking on her next great adventure, there’s something comforting about that. Did you take that photo? She has such a mischievous sparkle in her eye which much belies her years! She looks full of fun!

The people, that I have lost in my life, live in my mind and I often think at them in a kind and thankful way. I’m happy, I was allowed to know them in their time.

A lovely tribute. It is in the stories that we share with our own children that those we love continue to have a presence and an influence in the lives of the subsequent generations. I am sorry for your loss, Ed.
