I can’t believe that I am doing this little project for almost six months now. Time sure does fly, Last night I was just going through what images I have used so far, and it is turning into a nice little portfolio of shots. This week I chose an image from the recent Brian Boru Millenium Festival. As you will know, Wildlife photography is not my forte, but the ‘Birds of Prey’, display was to good to pass over. Most medieval shows will have some sort of bird display as they were an important part of life in those times. I recall seeing some of these fascinating creatures in action, flying high above the field until they spot some lunch. Once their prey is spotted they dive at incredible speed, swooping down and grabbing their prey in their talons before soaring back into the sky. It is quite impressive to watch them t work.
As you can see, the original image was OK, with some DOF and the focus on the Falcon’s right eye. Despite the DOF, their was still alot of distraction in the image so I went with a portrait crop to focus solely on the Falcon. Then I converted to mono in CS6. I added some Gaussian blur on a layer to further remove distraction in the background. I then tried to add a white vignette, but did not like the result, so I went for the framing effect using the Elliptical Tool, with some further blur to blend the edges.Sol that’s it for this weeks Re-work, I hope you enjoyed it. As always any thoughts or comments you may have would be greatly appreciated.

That’s a superb shot, Ed, and the post processing makes it stunning.

They are. I dream of being able to capture one of the wild red kites in flight… properly capture, not a blurred, indistinct shot. One day… 🙂

That will probably require one big, heavy, overpriced, super fast zoom lense….
But would definitely be worth it 🙂

Or a whole lot of luck with a basic bridge camera 🙂
My son has the big stuff… and he has got some pretty good ones. Which I may forgive him for eventually… 😉

Certainly a worthy rework – The problem I find with the DX cameras is that because they use a wider normal mens (due to the smaller sensor) you can’t get the background out of focus enough in camera – it has to be done -as you did- in post processing. Nice one Ed!

Indeed, i was unsure about the border. It wasn’t quite what I had in mind and a vignette looked terrible. what would you suggest as a possible step up from the dx? Ball park of 1000 to spend, hopefully😉

I have been mulling this over – probably a refurbished/used D600 – full frame and 24MP has been running stateside about $1,000-$1,300 – then of course you have to invest in the Nikon glass for it (I already have full-frame Nikkors from my film days.)

Yes I know it, the glass from film cameras can only be used in manual? But they are a he’ll of a lot cheaper than the digital ones. If I get the d600 at that price I might just have enough for a lense too😁

I do have some AF lenses and as I work in AP mode I think they will work on the D600. I wish you the best – I have a “sanctioned” abandoned asylum visit scheduled in August, if I don’t have mine by then I’m going to rent one.

Oooooh… something different! I love birds of prey. That shot is almost unrecogniseable compared to the original… wonderful!
The most amazing experience I ever had with birds of prey was in Peru. Id spent all day trekking along the Colca Canyon… but not a sight of them. Settled down to wait, worried wed be stuck there on the edge of the gorge all night… and then they came, 2 huge condors wingspan longer than I am tall! They spotted us and flew down to check us out, just circled lazily above us and then must have decided we werent fit to eat or anything to be afraid of, and just flew off. I was so enthralled that I forgot to photograph them. By the time I fumbled in my backpack for my camera, they were just black dots in the sky… sigh! Ill never forget it!

Wow, now that is a memory, Those condors look fantastic, lucky they didn’t think you suitable for dinner, lol. I didn’t know you travelled so much?
I would love to travel the globe like my late Gran did. 🙂

Well that was in 1999… well before kids! It was always my dream to spend the millenium at Macchu Picchu… I did go there, but was back home before new year the way the trip worked out. I flew over the Nazca lines too. I loved Peru. I always planned to go back… and then Carys came along and changed everything! So glad I got to do some stuff first… no regrets etc.
