It has been 15 weeks since I first begun contributing to the ‘Monochrome Madness Challenge’, over on Leanne Cole‘s blog. It has been a blast so far, and I love waiting to see what everyone else comes up with week by week. One of the benefits I have noticed from participating is that whilst I still shoot in colour, I look at each image I am about to take and picture it in Black & White. I feel that this has helped me progress towards capturing better images. Each week a fine selection of images are submitted which I feel encourages and inspires us to be more creative and try different things, be that shooting from a different perspective or learning/trying out new editing techniques. I’m really grateful to Leanne for the opportunity to participate and for the inspiration I have gotten from the other contributors.
My shot this week, like the image I used 15 weeks ago was taken at a shrine near the medieval church in Dunfierth, Co. Kildare. Since crossing over to the dark side and signing up to Adobe’s Creative Cloud, I have found myself exploring the many features on offer to see if it is any better than my old version. Well the jury is still out on that one, but I have found myself exploring the use of layers more and how when combined they affect the overall image. Well for this shot I used a combination of layers to create an effect that I quite like and combined them with a shot of the statue taken from a different perspective. And that’s it for yet another week, you can as always check out the rest of this weeks MMC images which will go live some time later today over on Leanne Cole’s Blog, depending on your time zone. Each week there are contributions from from photographers around the globe. So whether you are looking for inspiration or have a thing for black & white photography, you know were to find it. 🙂

The dark side lol?!! If you found one weeping blood, would you add a colour pop of red to your B&W image? You should do it anyway!

I could but that would be cheating and opening a can of worms that I might not want, lol. Remember all the drama back in the 80 with the moving statues?
But then my mischievous mind is telling me to stir it up and do it LOL 🙂

Ed – I don’t know if your aware of it , if you shoot RAW & Jpeg together and set the camera to Black & White – the RAWs stay in colour. I find it helps to visualize a shot by tone doing this.Regards
