Ok so after no takers on last weeks challenge, I have had to choose an image myself for this weeks Re-work. And here it is the delapidated yet striking ruin that is Blundell Castle. I shot this last year on one of my many explorations along the Kildare/Offaly border. Blundell can be found in a small park in Edenderry, Co. Offaly. One home to the fearless O’Carroll clan, after the Norman invasion, Blundell Castle was one of the many fortifications built in the area by the De Bermingham’s. You can read more about the history of Blundell Castle by clicking HERE. I have explored quite a number of these De Bermingham strongholds and churches which you can read about by following the links at the end of this post.
As you will see from the original B&W image, I have changed the sky quite a bit, bringing out more detail and I finished the image in Silver Effex with an increase in the structure. I just adore this photoshop plugin, as it gives so many more creative options when converting to B&W than the standard photoshop dashboard. So until next week, enjoy 🙂

This is a very sad old castle, Ed. I don’t know about you, but I always find the sight of marooned fireplaces very disturbing, and instantly start conjuring past times when the fire might have been crackling in the hearth. Hm.

These places, usually are quite sad Tish. And thanks to Cromwell, many now look like Blundell. Thankfuly there are a few great people whom have been fortunate enough to take ownership of some of these fine buildings and are either in the process of repairing them or keeping them in good condition.

Reminds me of Moydrum castle that is pictured on the cover of U2’s album – The Unforgettable Fire. Cool

Beautiful post-processing, Ed. I, too, love using red filtering to darken skies and highlight clouds in B&W conversions.
